USS Wisconsin
These are the last of the pictures from our VA Beach trip.  Last year we tried to tour the USS Wisconsin, which is docked in Norfolk.  Almost as soon as we got on board a torrential rain began that threatened to sweep the tourists off the decks and we were escorted off the ship.  This year we tried again with much better luck.  The USS Wisconsin is a battleship which was launched in 1943 during World War II.  She also saw service in the Korean War after which she was mothballed for 28 years.  She was recommissioned in 1988 and saw active service again during the first Gulf War (Desert Storm).  She was retired again after Desert Storm in 1995 and was moved to her current home in Norfolk in 2000.  You can tour the outside decks of the ship and climb from one level to the other, but you can't go inside.  The inside is kept sealed to prevent any damage from humidity and the decks are kept in a combat ready state because she is only considered "inactive" at this time, which means that she could be recalled at any time to active duty.  For a history of the USS Wisconsin you can visit here.  I just wonder what the people in the office building in the 4th picture think about with those guns pointed at them all day.
