Owen's second cord blood infusion!!! This was another big day for Owen. When he was born they
were able to collect enough stem cells for three batches. Owen had been doing great physically,
but his mental skills were definitely falling behind the curve. Part of that is due to his hearing
problems, but the fact that he couldn't sign at all or do many of the things that "normal" babies
do was worrisome. So we opted to use the second batch of cells for another infusion.
Once again Dr. Kurtzberg was there to do the infusion, along with her assistant June Allison who
was also there for Owen's first infusion. What a difference from the first time through! This
time it was just an outpatient procedure instead of a little preemie in the NICU. Thanks go
out again to Dr. Kurtzberg for being willing to give it a go. If you want to see an interview
with Dr. Kurtzberg that was aired on the Today show and see why it is we wanted to try this,
go to: Today Show Segment on Cord Blood Therapy
You will probably have to sit through a commercial at the beginning, but it is a great story.
I am writing this update about a month after the infusion happened. I won't spoil what's going
to happen, but lets just say that we really feel this was worth it!
